This Assignment is Designed for You to Meet the Following Outcomes:
Identify which type of interview should be used
Arrange interview questions
Arrange and conduct an interview
Identify what makes a good or successful interview
Instructions:
For this paper:
I want you to develop your one-on-one interview skills
I want the information gathered to be useful to you beyond this course
So I want you to conduct a semi-structured informational interview with someone who knows more about a topic than you do. In this case, I am suggesting someone who works in the profession/field you want to enter.
Find out how they got where they are (education, extracurricular activities, etc), what they do on a daily basis, what their position leads to, how one finds job openings, etc.
In other words, you are gathering information to help you make a possible career decision (if you haven’t done so already).
You should prepare at least 8-10 questions in advance of the interview.
Because you’re possibly dealing with busy professionals, you can inform them that the interview will take no more than 15-20 minutes (unless they want to go longer).
***If you have a suggestion for another type of interview (for example, maybe you want to interview someone on sea lion issues in the Pacific Northwest because that’s your passion), contact me. As I said above, the main goals are to develop your interview skills, and gather information that will be useful to you
My preference is that you conduct a face-to-face interview, because that is the best way to sharpen your skills.
You will turn in:
1. Typed transcription of the interview, with questions and responses (does not have to be exactly word for word; I just need a sense of the interview content). Include date, time, location, and name/position of interviewee. If you record the interview, make sure to ask for permission first.
2. In addition to the transcription, a two-three (2-3) page write-up of what you learned about interviewing, along with any difficulties, problems, complications, etc. Read Harrower, pgs. 78-81 for general interview tips and information.
How does the information gathered impact the way you think about your future (if you conducted an informational career interview)?
Other notes:
Face-to-face is best for your development.
Typed, 12 point, double-spaced, standard font.
Remember to be professional, courteous, build rapport, etc.
Prepare at least 8-10 questions in advance.
