The professional cover letter is perhaps considered one of the first items employers see when reviewing potential employees. Whether sending a resume in snail mail (unlikely these days) or via an email message, you’ll need a cover letter. It should tell a story of who you are and how you can add value to the organization. (Name), you should convince a potential employer that you are the right person for the job without appearing overly braggadocious! A cover letter is generally broken down into three paragraphs: 1. Paragraph one should state why you are contacting the employer, and list the name of a mutual contact, if available, to grab the attention of the reader. 2. Paragraph two should include information that summarizes your relevant experience, applicable coursework, and/or personal achievements. 3. Paragraph three should tell the employer that you will follow up with him/her on a specific date in a specific way. Don’t be too pushy. Give the employer at least a week or two to respond. Do not expect that the employer to reach out to you; show initiative and perseverance. Make sure you proofread your cover letters. Use Grammarly and spell-check, but don’t fully rely on these tools. You still need to proofread your letter. If you meant to say “manager” but instead type “manger”, spell-check will not pick this up because manger is a word. Any cover letter that contains typos or grammatical errors, if noticed by the employer or an interviewer (and you must assume they will notice), will most likely result in your cover letter and resume not being reviewed and placed directly in the trash bin.
