The paper is to feature complete sentences, strong paragraph structure, correct spelling, and proper grammar. Citations and References are to be done APA format. The paper should be five double-spaced pages. I do not require title pages or abstracts, but if you decide to provide them, neither they nor reference pages count toward your five pages. “Five pages” refers to the body of the text. The paper must utilize no less than 5 primary sources. Neither your textbook nor any other college textbook is to count as a primary source. A primary source is a book or journal article. Websites are not primary sources. Non-primary sources may be used, but not to fulfill the minimum requirement of 5 primary sources. Text should be Times New Roman (12 point) and use standard margins. The first term paper will be a critically evaluation of the notion of parenting styles from a multicultural perspective. The literature and research on this concept is to be presented in a coherent manner and then critically evaluated in terms of its general (traditional) strengths and weakness, as well as its cross-cultural strengths and weaknesses. There are many different ways to approach this topic. That said, please note the following, as they present common problems in doing this assignment:
1. Amy Chua is a lawyer and NOT a social scientist. Her work should not be used as an authoritative/primary source. If you talk about her “tiger parenting,” it must be critically examined from real social science (primary) resources. Otherwise, point will be deducted for perpetuating cultural stereotypes.
2. Diana Baumrind’s parenting styles (permissive, authoritative, authoritarian) are NOT to be used to judge and label parenting styles from other cultures. If you talk about them, they must be critically examined from real social science (primary) resources. Otherwise, point will be deducted for perpetuating cultural stereotypes.
