The observations will take place in an early learning setting in an early learning setting (i.e., child care center, home daycare, preschool program within an Elementary school or faith-based organization, etc.) with an active child.
You will not interact with the child during your observation.
Your role is simply to observe and write down what you observe.
Each observation will take about two hours. You will take handwritten notes during the observation, (please keep these as they initially will be collected and discussed with you). You will then type the observation notes using a 1-page Word document and submit them to Brightspace under the assignment section.
This week, you will observe the teacher conduct a read-aloud during circle time or large group time. As you observe, select 4 of the examples below and write a reflection addressing each in detail. Be sure to complete the recommendation.
Did the teacher read the book enthusiastically, really enjoying the story? Provide an example.
Were the contents of the book appropriate for the age of the children? Provide an example.
Were the children able to relate some parts of the story to their lives and past experiences (NAEYC 5a) ? Provide an example.
Were the children able to identify with one or more of the characters in the story? Provide an example.
How will the children benefit from attitudes and models found in the book? Provide an example.
Does the book broaden the cross-cultural element and accurately and authentically portray individuals and groups? Provide an example. (NAEYC 2a)
Is the text too long to sit through? Are there too many words? Provide an example.
Are there enough colorful or action-packed pictures or illustrations to hold attention? Provide an example.
Were the children able to participate in the story by speaking or making actions (NAEYC 4c) ? Provide an example.
Recommendation: Share at least 2 recommendations to the teacher for choosing children’s books AND conducting effective read-alouds. (NAEYC 5c)
