The main requirement is to write about a biography of the poet selected. I have selected 2 poets:

The poetry paper for this class is a research paper in the classical sense. You are to consider a variety of tools available in the school library in generating a paper which offers a biography of the poet selected at random from my list. The paper is to be both informative by supplying essential details of the life and works of the poet and analytical by sharing a few brief examples of the poet’s work and offering reasons why the poet is a worthwhile subject for study.

In considering the poet’s biography, mention the relevant details such as place and date of birth, important family members, station in life, education, careers, important accomplishments in the arts or elsewhere, how the poet was received by his or her contemporaries, and when and where the poet died, if he or she is now dead. Also consider the state of the poet’s country and world at the time he or she was working to determine if this may have had an impact on the author.

In dealing with the poet’s works, select two or more that you feel are interesting samples of his or her work. What are the subjects of the poems? What are the settings and moods? What ideas is the author trying to communicate to the audience? What techniques does the poet use?

pages 661 through 674 (9th edition), you will get a clear idea with sample essays of what goes into writing an essay about poetry. This is not an easy paper to write, but it can be a rewarding and interesting experience to discover the significance behind the art and the life of the artist. As stated above, this is a research paper. As such, you are expected to follow the MLA format for research papers. Your paper must be typed, double spaced, and be properly documented. Any information you take from sources must be accompanied by parenthetical

documentation of the source. In addition, your paper must have a works cited page which lists the sources you have used. If you are unfamiliar with this method, refer to an online writing website.
