Students are required to write a keynote speech for Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, to address attendees of the 2024 CES (Consumer Electronics Show), the world’s largest technology trade show. Jassy has been invited to speak for ten minutes on any topic related to the future of technology and/or business. There is no further guidance than that, but the show sponsors expect artificial intelligence (AI) to be a prominent theme across the event. There will be several keynote speakers, not just Jassy, scheduled at different times.
Students must conduct research and identify a speech topic relevant to Amazon’s long-term business strategy, but this need not fit into any discernible thought leadership strategy, real or imagined, currently happening at the company. You have creative license, but keep in mind the key principle of thought leadership: you are promoting an idea, not a company or product.
Students will orally deliver the speech in class. While you will not be graded on delivery, a strong “performance” can help ensure impact and clarity. You must also provide a written copy. I will take notes during your delivery, grading against the below criteria, but I may refer to the written copy later for clarification.
This assignment is worth 15 points based on the following criteria:
(5 pts.) Speech is effectively structured around a singular theme for maximum cohesiveness
(4 pts.) Makes effective use of rhetorical devices for maximum persuasiveness
(3 pts.) Makes effective use of literary devices and techniques for “writing for the ear”
(3 pts.) Demonstrates overall language mastery, lacking errors in grammar, syntax, etc.
