Scientific investigation lab report
1. General instructions (5 points): The report must be typed and printed on white paper, 8 ½ X 11 inches. Use 1-inch margins and 10, 11, or 12-point Arial or Time New Roman font (Please see me if these are not available on your computer/typewriter)Use 1.5 or double line spacing and number your pages. Each person write their own report. Group reports are not acceptable. Each of the sections below (except “Title page” and “Hypothesis”) should begin with a heading (e.g., AbstractMaterials and
Methods, etc.)Also be sure to check your spelling and grammar! 2. Title page (5 points): The title page should be on a separate page (nothing on the back of the title page) and contain a descriptive title of your project (the reader should be able to figure out what the project is about from the title)the date, your name, the course number (Biology 13), and your section number.
3Abstract (10 points)The abstract should be labeled with the heading “Abstract” which should appear at the top of the second page of your report (the first page is the title page)The abstract should be one paragraph that summarizes your experiment. You should 1) state the question you investigated, 2) briefly summarize your methods, 3) report your major results, and 4) summarize your conclusion. The purpose of the abstract is to give a short but complete summary of the entire project to the reader.
4. Introduction (15 points)This section should contain a brief introduction of scientific work by other scientists that are relevant. You can also use this section to introduce topics that are relevant or required to understand the research project (For example, you might introduce allelopathy in this section)
5. Hypothesis (5 points): You may put this in the introduction or abstract section. A hypothesis is not a question, it a statement of your predicted outcome for an experiment. Start your hypothesis statement as “My hypothesis is”.
6. Materials and Methods (15 points): Label the next section “Materials and Methods” and write a few sentences describing your experimental designThis section may contain either a drawing or verbal description of the growing containers. Indicate your independent and dependent variables. Be sure to explain the treatment for each experimental group, the treatment for the control group, what you are
measuring, and a discussion of how you controlled the extraneous variables. Remember that someone else should be able to duplicate your experiment based on your description.
7. Results (20 points): Summarize your results in words in this section. You must include your data in at what least one table and one graph. Tables and graphs must be computer generated. The graph should includelabeled x and y axes and a title. It should be at least 4 inches by 4 inches in size. 8Discussion (15 points): This section should include the following:
a) The predictions you made before the experiment began b) Your interpretation of your results (whether you accept or reject your hypotheses, and why)c) A discussion of possible alternative interpretations, including a list of possible sources of error in your experimental design or results, and what could be done in future experiments to improve the design and results.
d) How your results relate to previous research on this topic. e) Your conclusions about your original research question.
9.References (10 points): Include a list of at least 5 referencesYou may use your textbook as one reference but you may not use your lab manualMake sure you cite the references correctly.
