rite an argument- and thesis-driven essay that takes a stance on an issue of your choosing. Your thesis should be
based around a claim of policy. A claim of policy proposes a specific course of action in response to a problem,
controversy, or issue. It addresses questions like the following:
What should we do? How should we act? What should our future protocols be? How can we deal with this
problem? What measures should we put into place?
It’s up to you to define who the “we” is in those questions above. It could be a specific community. It could be the
(local, state, or national) government. It could be a school district, or an institution (a university, a corporation, a
church), or just a specific group of individuals.
Your thesis and points should reflect your own original thinking, but you will support your argument by citing
information from reputable sources. While this paper is a research paper, make sure you do more than present
facts you have found through research; you should be offering your own original interpretation, creating a paper
that is primarily argument-driven rather than primarily informational.
Two Topic Restrictions
1. The course of action you recommend cannot be that we need to be better about this issue or that we need to talk
more about that problem or that we need to expand the conversation or that people need to be educated about
such-and-such (however, if you want to propose education as a course of action, you can propose something like
a specific curriculum).
2. Make sure to avoid topics on the off-limits topics list in the syllabus.
