CSW Scenario 1:
Joan works in a group home with youth-in-care. She has been working in the group home for about a year and is responsible for building relationships with youth and supporting their individual case plans. Ever since Joan has been working at this group home, she has had a hard time connecting with one youth in particular: Sally. But one day, Sally asked to speak to Joan privately. Sally disclosed that she has been cutting herself with the blade from a pencil sharpener in her room. Sally said she doesn’t want to kill herself inst that she has been cutting because she has been feeling really depressed when she thinks about how her foster parents used to abuse her.
Sally asked Joan to promise not to tell anyone.
How should Joan respond?
CSW Scenario 2:
A CSW named Tom works in a daytime shelter for adults experiencing homelessness. Tom serves coffee and snacks and spends time getting to know the different adults that come through. Tom has been noticing that there is one adult who comes every day named Max, who has been returning for extra snacks and coffee saying that he hasn’t had any yet. Tom also has been noticing that Max frequently gets into arguments and sometimes physical fights with other patrons of the daytime shelter. Max has been talking to Tom about his life, his addiction problems and how he wants to get off the streets, but Max’s behaviour seems to be escalating and causing problems for the other staff and clients.
What should Tom do?
CSW Scenario 3:
Marnie had been working in the same-day program for seniors with disabilities for 15 years before Jessica, a new CSW, joined the team. Jessica got along well with Marnie at first, but Jessica has been noticing some things that are concerning. Jessica has observed that Marnie sometimes uses petty cash for personal snacks instead of for the clients. Jessica has also noticed that Marnie has been showing up late and leaving early nearly every day, leaving Jessica alone with the clients. Jessica has been thinking about speaking to Marnie or their manager about what has been going on, but Jessica is worried about how it may affect her relationship with Marnie and how if Marnie loses her job how the clients might miss a SW who has generally been a stable and positive support worker for over a decade in these clients lives.
What should Jessica do?
