Psychology can be defined as the science of behavior and mental processes. You’ve nearly finished a course in psychology. This assignment is your opportunity to demonstrate understanding of psychology. These four goals represent the basics of what must be included in your essay:
Students should identify, describe, and explain human behaviors and how they are influenced by social structures, institutions, and/or processes within the contexts of complex and diverse communities.
Students should articulate how mental processes {such as beliefs, assumptions, and/or values} are influenced by factors such as politics, geography, economics, culture, biology, history, and social institutions.
Students should describe ongoing reciprocal interactions among self, society, and/or the environment. {You may wish to look up the definition of reciprocal interactions.}
Students should critically evaluate relevant issues, ethical dilemmas, and/or arguments.
Here is the specific assignment instructions to follow so that you will meet the above goals:
Research Paper Instructions
Read the Social Psychology chapter then choose one significant topic/term from the chapter for your essay. Next locate a recent article in a popular media source that illustrates your chosen topic/term concept. Popular media sources can be found through an ordinary search engine (like Google) such as a newspaper (like the New York Times) or magazine article (Men’s Health).
For your topic/term, avoid research mentioned in the textbook by Asch, Milgram, and Zimbardo.
In your essay:
Discuss which Social Psychology concept the popular article is about.
Then, on a scholarly search engine like Google Scholar (or one recommended by a librarian), locate a college level, peer reviewed, scholarly (research) journal article on the same topic. A scientific source is something like the Journal of Social Psychology.
Be sure to critically evaluate your topic by writing an essay which summarizes and compares and contrasts what the popular article says versus what the research article says about the concept.
Look at numbers 1-4 at the top of this page. Be sure these four prompts are somehow covered in your discussion (essay).
You may use your textbook Psychology 2e. if you wish but this assignment is mostly about using the two outside sources described above. Papers that do not include a popular and a college level {college level means scholarly, academic, research based} source will be graded 0. Papers without APA in-text citation and an APA reference section will be scored 0.
An abstract and cover page are not required.
Any major Social Psychology terms used in your essay should be placed in bold font.
Limit your discussion: your paper should be about one Social Psychology concept.
Minimum: the body of your essay must be at least two double spaced pages. Maximum: three double spaced pages. Do not fudge the page count (for example, large fonts, extra space and/or headers may not be included in the page count).
