My Experience: Getting stuck in Ecuador while visiting my grandma, without my parents, due to dangerous riots and protests that abruptly occurred in 2019 that lasted for more than a week. My grandma and I were essentially trapped in her home without light and water due to it being cut off by the government (they cut it off to show power to the rioters. Us innocent civilians had to endure any collateral damage that would take place from the riots). We had designated days we were allowed to shop for groceries or necessities, and everyone had a curfew at 6 pm. It was extra difficult because my grandma had trouble walking. Sometimes we were able to go out, but we couldn’t because of her condition. During this time there was heavy use of tear gas, pepper spray, throwing of rocks, and bombs. This was a very scary time for us, hearing explosions, not knowing if our home could be hit, not knowing when I’d be able to go back home safely. My grandma and I tried our best to keep positive instead of being scared all the time. We achieved this when she showed me how to crochet, and that act allowed us to feel ease in all the destruction going around us.
