Steps: The following steps will help steer you through the writing process for the narrative essay.
Make sure that you have read through all of the material in the Narration Module. This is extremely important for your understanding and the success of this essay.
Choose a topic from the list below. (Papers submitted on other topics will not be accepted.)
To choose a topic, try freewriting on several of the topics. (See your text book for information regarding freewriting.)
After choosing a topic, complete a prewriting activity to develop your ideas. (See your text for information regarding prewriting.)
Write a working Thesis Statement.
Organize your essay by using the organization form. (Word attachment to this assignment folder; you should download and fill out relevant material, save, and upload back to this folder.)
Write a discovery draft. For this draft, only write the narrative, the account of the story you are telling. The narrative should have a beginning, a struggle or conflict, and a resolution.
Once you have the story down, write an appropriate introduction that sets up the story you will tell in the body paragraphs.
Navigate to the discussion board and post the introductory paragraph for your essay to the Narrative Essay – The Writing Process discussion board with the topic of the essay at the top of the posting. React to the postings of at least two other classmates. Read the comments on all of the postings. Many will be helpful when you edit and complete your essay.
After receiving feedback from at least two classmates, write the first draft of your essay. (This is optimal, but may not always be practical. Do not wait too late for feedback. If you receive no feedback from classmates, you are still responsible for turning your paper in by the due date.)
Revise and Edit your essay. Fill out the Revision Form for Narration (Word attachment in this assignment folder), save, and upload to this assignment folder.
Write and type your final draft of your paper. When typing your final draft, make sure that it is double-spaced. I do not put comments on papers that are not double-spaced. (This means between lines, not between words.)
Submit as separate, labeled files the discovery draft, organizational form, first draft, and final paper through PAWS Assignment (Narrative).
Instructions for accessing feedback once your essay has been graded may be found in the Getting Started Module under Content. Feedback takes time and is not instantaneous. Please be patient.
Submit through PAWS Assignment (Narrative). Each must be separate files and labeled with the names below.

Topic Choices:
Write the story of your own education. Focus on several specific events that shaped your view of your self as a learner.
Write an account of one of these “firsts”: your first extended stay away from home, your first encounter with a culture that is different from your own, or your first experience with the serious illness or death of someone close to you. Make sure your essay includes a thesis statement your narrative can support.
Choose three books you have read that most influenced you at important stages in your life. Then write your literary autobiography, tracing your personal development through these books.
