The goal is to inform your audience about a topic in a 7 to 8-minute speech. Think of informative speaking as “teaching.” Your goals of informative speaking are to enhance our understanding, recall, and interest (see Chapter 15 Speaking to Inform).

Below are steps to assist you in completing this speech assignment.
Step 1: Research is required for this assignment. You must have at least 3 sources that have been checked for bias (see Chapter 7 Evaluating Internet Documents).
Step 2: Your sources must be included as proper APA or MLA format in-text and/or oral citations in the outline and listed in a Work Cited List.Gather information from a variety of sources (books, academic databases, magazines, websites, interviews, etc.). Review Chapter 7.
Step 3: You will need to orally cite at least three of your sources from your research during your speech. Review how to orally cite your sources.
Step 4: Organize your speech with an attention-getting introduction that introduces the topic, connects with your audience, establishes your credibility, states your one-sentence central idea, and previews your points (see Chapter 10).
Step 5: Cover each main point of your speech with appropriate support from your research.
Step 6: Conclude the speech with a review of your main points, a restatement of your central idea, and end with a vivid “clincher” or sense of closure (see Chapter 10).
Step 7: Review Chapter 11. You will write a formatted, indented, labeled preparation outline for this assignment. This is not a written manuscriipt or essay, rather, it should be a preparation outline. The outline should be crafted before you present your speech and written in complete sentences.
