In this assignment, you will be creating a cultural genogram. The cultural genogram is a creative, practical tool that assists social workers in understanding a client’s family and cultural context. By building on this understanding, social workers can then develop management plans that are more consistent with the client’s worldview and more likely to be accepted.
For this assignment, your cultural genogram will focus on increasing your awareness of your own cultural background, including the significant intersections and socio-cultural differences in your family and the meanings attributed to these differences. By viewing your own family through the lens of a cultural genogram, you will gain a deeper understanding of the complexity and diversity of families that will have application to your future social work practice working with individuals, families, and communities.
create a cultural genogram including at least two generations of your family (i.e., your parent’s generation & your generation, including any siblings you might have). Complete this assignment to the best of your ability with your knowledge about your family, whether biological, adoptive or chosen (etc.). In other words, you can define your family in a way you are comfortable sharing. You can hand draw your genogram or create it within a computer program (such as Word). If you hand draw your genogram, be sure you will be able to take a photo of it to upload in the Discussion Board part of the assignment.
Define your ethnic culture of origin (or the major ethnic/racial groups you or your family are descended from (i.e., Irish, Greek, English, Haitian, African, Navajo, etc.) to the best of your knowledge (if you don’t know, you can choose to create a symbol for “unsure” if you like, or not).
Families are complex and dynamic, and many people do not always know their family’s full history or other details because they were not passed down or shared due to circumstances outside our control. It is important to recognize what we know and also don’t know about ourselves and our families (and our clients and their families), as it is all part of each of our stories. But only include what you are comfortable sharing with your peers and instructors.
Assign colors to delineate ethnic/racial groups and indicate the color or combination of colors on each person’s circle and/or square (like a pie chart!). IMPORTANT: Do not include full personal details such as first AND last names, as your genogram will be shared publicly with your peers and instructors; first names, initials, or pseudonyms (i.e. fake names) are acceptable.
Develop and label symbols for your genogram. Be sure to include a Symbol Key with your genogram so that others know what your symbols mean. You will need to create symbols to label the intersecting identities of the people you included in your genogram; consider including (1) sexual identity; (2) social class; (3) religious/spiritual affiliation or beliefs; (4) birth/death dates (year only) and age; (5) ability and/or mental health status; and (6) gender identity.
You can search Google Images for other examples of Cultural Genograms and the symbols they use.

How would you describe your cultural identity? Which intersecting identities are most central to who you consider yourself culturally?
Are there cultural aspects you feel pride about? Explain. Are there aspects you are unsure of or don’t know much about? Describe (based on your comfort level).
Describe any thoughts and/or feelings that emerged from participating in this exercise.
