Identify a higher education position that aligns with your goals. Research the requirements for this position and identify the division of the college in which this position is found and its function within the organization.
Research the core competencies relevant to the position you have identified. By researching core competencies, you can begin to compare the knowledge, skills, and dispositions you currently possess (and do not possess) to what the industry says you should possess. In this way, you can prioritize your goals and objectives, thereby creating an action plan that is aligned, relevant, and realistic. For instance, if you aspire to be the director of learning technologies, you might discover that this position is part of academic affairs or the information technology division. You would then research the core competencies of that position using academic journal articles, professional organization resources, and independent research. Examples of core competencies for the director of learning technology might be:
“The director is a visionary who is able to create and articulate a vision and mission to constituents.”
“Support student teaching and learning with the use of available technology.”
