Learning Outcomes: Gain experience reading a diverse range of texts rhetorically; Practice giving and receiving feedback within the writing community, including evaluating and acting on feedback from different sources.
Instructional Materials: Top Hat Chapter 8 on Synthesis; Chapter 9 on Citing Resources
Overview: This assignment asks you to research potential solutions to the problem you have identified and synthesize this research, presenting it in paragraph form for your peers and instructor.
Note: You will be submitting your assignment twice – once to the instructor review page (this assignment page) and a second time in the assignment submission space for peer reviews (next page). Both submissions are due on the same day.
Instructions
Step 1: Develop a list of Search Terms
Write down some potential solutions to your problem and develop a list of search terms based on these notes. Include those search terms for your instructor.
Search terms are words or phrases that are related to your topic or particular solutions. These can be synonyms, or words that are more specific or general than the idea you have in mind
For example, some search terms related to public transportation could be: transit, transit-dependent, light rail, commuter rail, dedicated bus lanes, ridership, HOV lane, etc.
Step 2: Begin Researching
Next, start researching these solutions. Find at least three reliable secondary sources from the ASU library databases, or a combination of sources from the ASU library and the open web. Then, generate or create APA style reference list entries for these sources. Here are some questions you should use to guide your research:
Are there other solutions that are currently in place that are not working?
What might have been tried in the past to solve your problem within the community?
What might have been tried elsewhere, in another similar community, to solve the problem?
If you need help finding sources, contact your instructor. Also consider using the Ask-a-Librarian function on the ASU Library page.
Step 3: Draft your Synthesis
Develop a synthesis of the sources, presenting them for your peers and instructor. In this synthesis:
Write one introduction paragraph providing a brief overview of your chosen problem research in your own words.
Next, write at least three paragraphs about possible solutions. Each solution paragraph should discuss a separate solution. You should identify solutions that are already in place as well as solutions that might help to solve the problem and those that would not.
You can use more than one source per paragraph, if necessary. The synthesis should also include 1-2 quotes; discuss the quotes, and the rest should be in your own words.
Finally, write a paragraph in which you discuss the credibility of your sources and their usefulness for your project.
After the synthesis, include a reference list in APA style for the 3 sources.
Step 4: Upload Documents
Upload your synthesis as a Word document or PDF to the assignments for instructor review (here) and peer review (next page).
Step 5: Complete Two Peer Reviews
By the following due date, you should provide feedback to two of your peers and receive peer feedback on the synthesis. You should use the feedback on your research to improve the use of your sources for the upcoming Problem-Solution Proposal feedback draft.
This process will also give you practice for the upcoming peer review of the Problem-Solution Proposal.
