Etymology Instructions and Submission
For this week’s writing assignment, you are going to be writing about a word; that’s all etymology is. Etymology is a word’s definition, where it came from, and how it has changed over time.
This assignment should be a five paragraph essay with 500-750 words.
You might choose to organize your essay in the following way.
I. Introduction
II. Discussion of your word’s traditional definition and origin (etymology)
III. How your word has changed over time or other meanings (aside from its oringinal intent)
IV. Redefine your word in an unusual or unexpected way. For example, you might choose to redefine “family” as a group that has shared experiences, like cancer survivors.
V. Conclusion
The best essays will avoid cliches and offer compelling observations. Select abstract, obscure, frequently misunderstood, or commonplace words that can be reinterpreted, rather than relying on simple, concrete nouns that have limited potential.
Please use an academically based online dictionary when defining your word. I suggest the Oxford English Dictionary.
You will also need to include a Works Cited Page (visit Purdue Owl’s website if you are unsure of what this should look like). Your page should look similar to the following:
