Take one or more screen shots from the website you choose for your critical analysis.
You may have to dig into the website, beyond the home page to find an appropriate visual or visuals. You can use Window-Shift-S to capture a screen or a portion of a screen in Windows 10. If you are analyzing a video, provide the URL.
Analyze the visual carefully and critically. Consider these questions:
In what source did the visual appear? What organization or company sponsors the site? What do you know about the background and goals of the group?
For what purpose was the visual created?
Who is the target audience for this website? For what kind of audience was the visual created? Hostile? Friendly? Neutral?
Is the visual argument primarily an appeal to logic (Logos), emotion (pathos), or to authority (Ethos). Or is it a mix?
What are the individual images in the visual? Is there significance in the relative position of images and the distance between images?
What is the relationship between the images and the background?
How are color, shading and empty space used?
If people are pictured, what are their activities, gestures, facial expressions, positions, and body language?
Does the visual include words? If so, are they necessary? How do the words support the visual, or how does the visual support the words?
Is the visual effective, attractive? Interesting? Clear? Convincing?
What argument does the visual make?
What visual content can you use to communicate your claim and to support your claim?
The Assignment
Provide a copy of the visual or visuals you are analyzing. Begin your critical response by identifying the source of the visual and the purpose of the visual. Then state the argument the visual makes and your reaction to the argument. Examine the individual parts of the image, one at a time. Consider how effective each element is, and how well the elements work together to create a convincing visual argument. Identify any elements that you consider unconvincing or irrelevant to the purpose of the visual. End with a strong concluding statement that summarizes your reaction.
Alternative: Instead of analyzing the argument presented by someone else’s visual from a website, create your own visual argument such as a photo or a chart or infographic. Analyze the argument made by your visual following the assignment guidelines above. You may use an AI graphics generation program to help you create your visual. Show how your prompt was designed to support your argument.
