Your paper should be about 6 pages. In addition to being well written, the essay should be insightful, well-organized, tightly argued, narrowly focused, and demonstrate a strong grasp of the material. It also should use the texts well, which means there should be discussions of specific lines, points, paragraphs, and sections in the texts. Papers should not be vague, state the obvious, have paragraphs that go over a page, delve into irrelevant details, wander aimlessly, or have other characteristics of being written at 4 am in a panic and while sleep deprived.

For each option, your essay should focus on four texts so far. You must use two of the following: Mean Girls, Battle of Algiers, Circle of Love Over Death/Confessions of Dirty Warrior (together count as 1), and The New Jim Crow/Between the World and Me (together count as 1). For your other two texts, you may use one or two more from the list above, and you may also use the pieces by Sen, Fanon, King, Sartre, Levi, and Malme. Anything not mentioned in this paragraph may be used, but it does not count as one of your four texts.

Option 1: In Wretched of the Earth, Fanon argues that the relationship between the settler and native has always been marked by violence and that violence by the native may result in a variety of individual and collective benefits. Write an essay responding to a piece of Fanon’s argument, such as the role of violence in social control, potential individual or collective benefits of using violence, or something else related to violence.

Option 2: Sartre famously declared “The anti-Semite makes the Jews.” Amartya Sen discusses the ways in which individuals get categorized around a single identity and how individuals struggle with the need for communal identity at the same time desire to be recognized as “diversely different” individuals. Write an essay in which you consider Sartre’s and Sen’s arguments.

Option 3: King singles out the “White Moderate” who prefers order over justice and either does not know or does not appreciate the situation of the oppressed. Write an essay in which you consider this situation EITHER from the perspective of the oppressed OR the White Moderate.

Option 4: Both King and Rawls touch on the nature of just and unjust law, while King goes a step further and argues about responding to unjust law. Write an essay about the nature of just and unjust law, about how individuals do or do not respond to unjust law, how the law can be used to narrow our thinking and hide both problems and potential solutions, or something else about the role of the law.
