Write your first reaction paper (400+ words). Make sure that you begin with two things: a quick summary of the reading (2-3 sentences that address the reporter’s questions: who? what? when? where? why? and how?) and a clear assertion: The best adjective to describe person X is adjective Z (or something similar). Then support that assertion with evidence.
Be sure to include at least one correctly formatted direct quotation. Limit quoted material to 39 or fewer words total. Confirm that you have set up the quotation in APA format by reviewing the directions in Assignment 04.
Remember to refer to a work by the last name of the author (year of publication). Do not write “Sadie and Maud” or “How to Talk to Girls at Parties.” Instead, use Brooks (1963) or Gaiman (2006).
Since this is your reaction to the piece, first person pronouns (I, me, my, etc.) are allowed. Do not, however, open sentences with I think or I believe. This phrasing is wordy and unnecessary. Since this reaction paper is your academic work, readers already know that the ideas and insights are yours.
Your job is to broaden the perspective of your readers with your unique take on the material. Do not include lengthy plot summary, information about the author, or historical positioning. I am interested in hearing your reaction to Brooks (1963), not an explanation of societal conditions for women in the early twentieth century.
