(Weeks 1 & 2) The business of your entertainment: please conduct some preliminary research on the company/companies that produce your entertainment (Shapiro’s Media Universe Map); find some statistics about the viewership, audience attendance and/or box office sales; share your findings and be sure to cite your sources (how to cite websites).
(Weeks 3 & 4): Ideology & representation in your entertainment: remember, your entertainment product is a cultural text that makes meaning for its audience. Where conflicting ideologies are represented in your entertainment (Carrington)? How is race, class, gender and/or ethnicity represented in your entertainment (hooks, Butler)? What cultural meaning do you think is made through the ideologies and representation you identified ? Discuss your findings.
(Week 5) Reception of your entertainment: what have been some criticisms of your entertainment (past, or present)? Do you agree with them? Why, why not? Please cite and discuss ONE piece of criticism* per Stuart Hall’s encoding-decoding theory: dominant (the critic LOVED the film/show/event) negotiated (the critic had mixed reactions) OR oppositional (the critic HATED it) (how to cite magazines; how to cite newspapers; how to cite websites).
(Week 6) Convergence: how has your entertainment become popular through interactive digital platforms, like social media – what Henry Jenkins calls “participatory culture?” What sort of fandoms does your entertainment have? Please give examples with citations (how to cite websites).
