We will read the short story, “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson, and build essays around a theme you interpret from the short story. The theme of a work of literature is its central or dominant idea. For another take on theme, think about it this way: Theme is what an author has to say about a topic. For example, if the topic is violence, then a possible theme could be: Smith illustrates that violence can shatter communities. Essentially, your assignment is to form an opinion about what Shirley Jackson is showing in the story. Assert your opinion and then prove it with “facts” from the story.
