This is your first at-home investigation. Run the Phet simulation for earth and sun. Use the “To scale” model and activate all items (gravity, velocity, grid etc.). Make sure gravity is turned on. Write down your observations and answer the following questions:
What happens if you slightly increase or decrease Earth’s velocity? (you can change the velocity by clicking on the tip of the red velocity vector, holding the mouse key down and moving it away or toward the earth along the vector line)
Does the simulation agree with Kepler’s second law?
What parameters do you need to change to make the Earth crash into the Sun? Explain
What happens if you decrease the Sun’s mass? What orbit parameters will change and why?
What happens when you increase the Sun’s mass? How does the orbit change and why?
I recommend writing down your answers on a piece of paper and then take the test below.
