Many historians argue that one key element of the witch hunts is a new understanding of witches that developed in the 1400s, a definition of a witch as someone with a relationship with the devil. Levack, for example, points to this on p. 8 of the intro we read from The Witch Hunt in Early Modern Europe.
Given the primary sources we have read, how important is the relationship with the devil in making someone a witch in the minds of early modern people? Why is that relationship important (or not)?
