Start by identifying two subcultures that you currently feel you belong to and that you
would find interesting to research. For each of these subcultures, you’ll write a brief description (these should be no more than four lines) that gives an overview of what the subculture is and your position in the subculture (when you joined that subculture, how you feel about it, what you think of it, etc.). Be as specific as possible. 1. Lend itself to background and preliminary research (that is, written and visual sources must be available for your analysis and meaningful incorporation); 2. Be local and accessible; 3. Have a place, field site, or event space that you will be able to visit at least twice during the semester; and 4. Have at least two people you can interview who have different relevant roles. subculture: a culture derived from another culture.
primary
research
The purpose of the interview is to help you gain insight into the perspective of another member of your subculture. This can be valuable on a number of levels and for a number of reasons. It can help you understand the subculture more as an outsider, offer additional information you can use to examine your own positionality, and provide interesting narrative content for the research. As you plan for your interview, consider what information you would like
to get out of the interview, and write out your questions accordingly. In preparation for this assignment, write up a minimum of ten questions you plan to ask your interviewee. Make sure the questions are in an order that is logical. This will allow you to know what you intend to get out of an interview and enable you to adapt when an interviewee inadvertently answers more than one question at a time or shares information you would like to ask about in
greater depth. Make sure you ask leading questions rather than questions that can be answered with one-word responses. Interviews can be conducted in various ways: through online chats, via telephone or in person. Each method has its own plusses and minuses, so be aware that they will yield different products. There’s minimal to no transcribing to be done. You will not transcribe your interview into your research completely. Rather, you will treat it as you would a written, secondary source. Remember, we’re still in the knowledge-making phase here. interview with a
fellow subculture member.
observations
When we engage in writing, it is important to try to re-create the spaces we are visiting—in other words, to explore the field sites where we are spending our time. As part of our researched, you need to identify a field site that will be relevant for your subculture. This can be a location where it meets, a place where history, event or memory is held. For this reason, your observations are legitimate research. This includes your experiences as well. Just make sure that they make structural sense and are working together with the other elements of your research. You might even decide to start with an experience or observation and develop your central thesis around it.
Secondary Research
Aside from your interviews and own observations, it is important that you understand what other
appropriate sources are saying about your subculture and how that connects to your own
experiences and observations. Therefore, I’d like for you to locate at 4-6 appropriate sources as part of the research. At least half of these should be scholarly in nature. Your sources, however, won’t be the star of your research. This is not a research report or annotated bibliography. Rather, your own thoughts and experiences will be in the driver’s seat. Your sources should be supporting or challenging or adding to these ideas, and you should be providing commentary back to those sources and joining these conversations. The most important thing to do is to find common threads in your research, identify your main themes and use the information you have gathered, combined with your own narrative understanding or experience, to create your final piece. Your final paper will end up being roughly seven pages long, given the amount of data you have collected. This should be formatted in APA style and can be multimodal (that is, use
images). The research should be primarily written form, but you are additionally encouraged to include an additional mode of communication. This can be visuals, images, embedded videos, etc. as long as they’re appropriate.
