How do transformational leaders engage, motivate, and get teams moving in a common direction for a common goal? Research this topic and apply the constructs to either:
A real-life team you’re working on
A team you are familiar with
A hypothetical team you might lead
Apply the 4 I’s of transformational leadership within your analysis. Include a brief description of the purpose and make-up of your team. Provide substantive support and detailed examples for how leaders demonstrate transformational behaviors in your team. Explicitly link your examples to the behaviors. Alternatively, perhaps your leader(s) don’t demonstrate any or all of the transformational behaviors. How would you develop the skills of a leader in order to demonstrate the transformational behaviors (4 I’s)? see 4 I’s attached.
One of the things I’m seeing in the DB this week is some GREAT discussion on what it means to be a transformational leader and the 4 I’s of transformational leadership. This is important to establish a clear understanding of transformational leadership.
I’m equally interested in how YOU demonstrate transformational behaviors. Specifically, link your examples specifically back to the 4 I’s. For example, I have individual feedback sessions with my direct reports. This could relate to several of the 4 I’s but probably most closely to individualized consideration.
In your posts/replies this week, tell us how you demonstrate transformational leadership behaviors.
In your PAPER this week, do the same thing. First, provide a clear and explicit description of the main constructs being used in your paper. For example, provide a clear description of transformational leadership and the 4 I’s. Only after you lay the groundwork can you start doing a critique or analysis of your main constructs. I like using the analogy of a pizza. If I asked you to critique the pizza you had for dinner (or breakfast) yesterday, it wouldn’t do you much good unless you first told me what kind of pizza you had. Same thing applies here. Explain your main constructs first, then you can base your critique or analysis off of the foundation you just set.
Research by leadership scholars has shown that a transformational style of leadership tends to lead to the best organizational outcomes. Some studies have conflated charismatic and transformational leadership styles, concluding that you cannot have one without the other. However, some researchers have argued that there are some important distinctions between transformational and charismatic leadership, and that one can, indeed, exist without the other. Perhaps one of the most important distinctions between charismatic and transformational leadership is that, in the former leadership style, leaders foster dependency and obedience to the leader. In the latter leadership style, leaders foster commitment to the organization. The recent focus on transformational leadership has led to a rich body of knowledge on the methods and impacts of transformational leadership. Transformational leadership stems from leaders’ relationships with followers.
