Cultural Formulation Assignment Guide
A cultural formulation is an essential component of a case conceptualization. It describes the impact of culture on a person and answers the question: What role does culture play in the counseling relationship and client’s presenting issues? (Sperry & Sperry, 2020). A detailed lecture, discussion and practice using this model will be provided to students prior to submitting assignments. This is a scholarly assignment meaning that it needs to follow APA style, formatting and references.
Based on the client scenario, you will write a paper that will include the following elements with 1 paragraph dedicated to each of the sections and sub-sections below:
Introduction (1 paragraph): Brief explain of cultural formulation and its value, 1-2 sentences on the client/case and thesis statement to introduce the paper.
Cultural Formulation (Sperry & Sperry, 2020 model)
Cultural identity & client’s explanatory model: Client’s sense of belonging to a particular group or groups or identities (at least 3), expectations placed on the client due to these identities & backgrounds & person’s beliefs regarding the cause of their issues, condition or impairment? (1-2 paragraphs)
Acculturation, acculturative stress & influence of culture & personality: Level of stress derived from level of acculturation which will include psychosocial difficulties. Identify the extent of the impact of cultural dynamics and personality dynamics on the presenting issues in this case. Is one more operative than another and hypothesize percentage of treatment that needs to focus on both. (1-2 paragraphs)
Culturally sensitive treatment recommendations: Identify and explain rationale for two counseling approaches, techniques or interventions would you implement with this client that would demonstrate cultural humility, empathy or responsiveness. (1 paragraph)
Conclusion: A summary of the case and treatment recommendations. (1 paragraph)
