OVERVIEW
Creating an annotated bibliography is a great way to strengthen your research skills. In part two of the three-part project for the course, you will locate scholarly sources related to the topic you chose for the American History Opposing Viewpoints Project: Summary Assignment, learn how to format different types of sources according to your writing style guidelines, and assess each source in a written annotation.
INSTRUCTIONS
Based on the topic you chose for the American History Opposing Viewpoints Project: Summary Assignment, conduct a search for:
1. A scholarly book written by an academic in the field of history. Scholarly books should be located from the Jerry Falwell Library (avoid selecting children’s books!).
2. A peer-reviewed journal article focused on your topic. Peer-reviewed journal articles should be located from the Jerry Falwell Library (avoid selecting book reviews!).
3. A scholarly website – look for sites with URLs that end in .edu (university), .gov (government), or .org (organization), as these are deemed more reliable for academic research. (Avoid websites with URLs that end in “.com,” as they are commercial websites and not appropriate for academic research at the college level).
*As you search for sources, keep in mind that a key component of this assignment is to locate sources that include opposing viewpoints related to the topic you chose. Please note, the website articles previously assigned during Module 3 should not be used for this paper.
Once you have located the three required sources, format a reference for each. For help with formatting citations, click on “Writing Style Guides” located on the main menu of our Canvas course. This will take you to the Online Writing Center where you can reference the style guide for your specific discipline.
Next, underneath each reference, write an annotation (an assessment of the source) of at least 75 words. Each annotation should include a brief summary of the content of the source, the credentials of the author or source, and an evaluation of the usefulness of the source.
You should follow the American History Opposing Viewpoints Project: Annotated Bibliography Example provided to format your paper. Type your paper using 12 pt. Times New Roman font and proofread carefully. Save your paper as a Microsoft Word document and upload it through the appropriate submission site.
Note: Your assignment will be checked for originality via the Turnitin plagiarism tool.
