Learning Outcome:
This assignment is designed to get us more comfortable finding and presenting single works of art from specific periods.
DIRECTIONS:
Choose and post a work of Paleolithic or Neolithic Art in the class gallery. It should be between 150-200 words. Post your image, tell us whether it is Paleolithic or Neolithic, the approximate date it was made, and where it is located. If you can find any information regarding the materials from which it was made, please include that too.
Here are the approximate dates of the Paleolithic and Neolithic Eras as discussed in the course materials:
Paleolithic: 2.5 million BCE – 10,000BCE
Neolithic: 10,000BCE- 3,000BCE
A NOTE ABOUT DATES:
BCE= “Before the Common Era”
ACE= “After the Common Era”.
We currently use the acronyms “ACE” and “BCE” to describe time. If an art object was made before the common era (BCE) that indicates it was made before the birth of the historical figure of Jesus in the year 0. An art work made after the common era begins (ACE) indicates that it was made after the birth of Jesus. We are currently living in the year 2022ACE, two-thousand and twenty-two years after the birth of Jesus. These terms have replaced BC (Before Christ) and AD (“Anno Domini” Latin for “The year of the Lord” indicate Christ’s birth), because they are more inclusive, even though the refer to the same historical even.
PROF D’s EXAMPLE:
Gwion Gwion Rock Paintings, 15,000 BCE, Found in the Northwest Kimberly Region of Austrailia.
This rock painting found in Austrailia represents four figures who appear to be standing or moving in a line. The figures are dressed in regalia, and though their proportions are elongated, it is easy to identify the anatomy of the human body: legs, arms, shoulders, heads, and stomachs. The painter appears to have used the bottom edge of the rock as a ground line, and the curved anatomys of the figures’ limbs give the figures animation and movement. Perhaps these figures are dancing, or participating in a ceremonial ritual.
