Introduction:
The purpose of Part 1 of the project is for you to apply all that you learned in Weeks 1 and 2 about descriptive statistics and apply it to data that you found.
Activity Instructions:
Follow the directions and answer all parts of the questions. Remember to include your SPSS data file when you submit below.
Important:
Remember, 15 or more observations per group is preferable; at least 10 per group is mandatory.
Paste the SPSS output into the Word document.
Submit your SPSS data file in the drop box along with the Project Part 1 Word document.
Use your name as part of the file name, e.g., McMurphy Project Part 1.
For this assignment, complete the following:
Describe your data:
What level of measurement does your data represent: nominal, ordinal, interval or ratio? Explain. (2 points)
What do these numbers represent, crimes? Prisoners on death row? Etc. (2 points)
Where did you obtain the data? Whether you obtained this data online or from an agency, give the source. (2 points)
Answer the following:
Create a frequency distribution for the data as a whole (use the data for all of the groups) (5 points)
Organize the data into a grouped frequency distribution. Explain why you chose the interval size you did. (8 points)
Create a pie chart using Excel. Use percentages for data labels. (5 points)
Paste the SPSS output and Excel graphs into your Word document.
Provide the descriptive statistics of the data for each group by calculating measures of central tendency (mean, median, and mode) and a measure of dispersion (standard deviation). Label and paste the SPSS output into your Word document. (8 points)
Examine the measures of central tendency and decide if the data for each group is symmetrical, positively skewed or negatively skewed. Create SPSS histograms to help with your decision. Explain your answers. (10 points)
Compare the two groups on the measures of central tendency and dispersion. What conclusions can you make about the differences, if any, between the two groups? (8 points)
Tips for Success:
Use all of your resources (i.e., notes, practice problems feedback, Exam 1 feedback). Pay careful attention to the directions. You have data for different groups. Question 2 asks you for descriptive statistics based on ALL of the numbers taken as a whole. If you have two groups, for example, you need to combine the groups into one data file for this question 2. Then separate them back into their groups for the remainder of the questions.
Review Sample Statistics Project Part 1.
