Case Study #2
Instructions: Please read the following case study. After consulting your DSM-V, submit your diagnosis following the required format (see the “Guidance for the Case Study Assignments” link in Blackboard for further details):
Name: Rose
Source: Clinical Case Studies (this is a real person, given a false name)
Background Information:
Rose stated that her problem began in her adolescence. Since then, she said that she tried many times to clear some parts of her house but without any success. She informed us that there was a history of a similar problem in her family, as her mother, father, maternal grandfather as well as her son displayed similar behavioral patterns. She revealed that both her parents’ problem was very severe. Rose presented significant avoidant personality traits. Specifically, she stated that she avoided working with anyone who could criticize her. She also found that initiating was very difficult if she had to do it herself and that she was afraid of meeting new people, as she felt inadequate.
Prior to this study, Rose had completed several therapy programs for victims of incest and for substance abuse. She had been a victim of incest by her father during her childhood. He abused her from the ages of 6 to 14 years, at which point he was incarcerated for child abuse. Although the abuse was very difficult for Rose, she reported that she had since forgiven her father. Rose associated the onset of her behavior with her father’s abuse. For Rose, her behavior was a way to feel alive. Rose had no contact with her father since his incarceration, and he died several years ago.
She was diagnosed with major depression after the death of her husband in 1995. During this period, she temporarily lost custody of her children because of her symptoms. After starting therapy for her major depression, she regained custody of her children. Rose had not been working for several years, and she said it was directly related to her disorder. However, it was during her major depressive episode that she stopped working. Rose also had compulsive buying behavior. She described having uncontrollable urges to excessively buy or acquire items, such as tissue boxes, clothes, and food. She had once succeeded in preparing about 30 bags filled with items to give to charity organizations. Since then, she avoided dealing with her cluttered home. She recognized having a problem and realized that she acquired items because she rapidly felt attached to them and because she was worried she would need them in the future. Furthermore, she mentioned that her disorder kept her alive as she feared to lose the sense of who she was without her problem. Her expectations related to therapy seemed realistic because she was aware that the probability of eliminating her problem entirely was low, but she wished to, at the least, clear her home to make it more functional and welcoming.
Descriiption of the Problem:
Rose was a 39-year-old woman, mother of two children, and recipient of employment insurance. She decided to consult a psychologist in 2000 to receive help with her severe problem. She revealed that she had suffered from this problem for 20 years now and was no longer able to face it on her own. She had never undertaken psychotherapy for this specific problem. However, she had tried several pharmacological treatments (e.g., Wellbutrin and Paxil), which were not effective. She feared that her problem would become as severe as her father’s problem, for which he had never received help. She described her father as a packrat, cluttered in a house full of junk.

Here are some tips to help with successfully completing this assignment.
First of all, study the content in the link entitled “Guidance for the Case Study Assignments” if you have not already.
Second, you will need to determine which disorder Rose suffers from. Go to “DSM Notes – Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders” inside this week’s module. There you will see a Power Point that covers 5 disorders according to the DSM-V.
The 5 disorders are:
Hoarding Disorder, Trichotillomania, Excoriation Disorder, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, and Body Dysmorphic Disorder
Based on the case study, and the content in the power point, determine which disorder Rose suffers from.
Finally, use your experience from completing Case Study # 1 and / or the example of “Eeyore” as a template to operate from to complete this case study. (The case study of Eeyore is located inside the link entitled “Guidance for the Case Study Assignments.”)
Case Study Assignments (Overview) – Your first assignment that involves the use of a case study will be given the week of 8/21 – 8/27
Some of the assignments in this class will be case studies. These case studies will provide detailed information about a client, sometimes real, sometimes fictitious. Your first assignment that involves the use of a case study will be given the week of 8/21 – 8/27.
If you scroll down inside this module, you will see the following:

NOTE: Case studies of fictitious characters may contain spoilers for your favorite TV shows, movies, and/or books. You’ve been warned.
Many of the characters in the case studies will be based on movies, tv shows, and books. Please note that you will not need to watch the movies, tv shows, or read the books in order to complete the case studies.
* An example of a case study (one on Eeeyore from Winnie The Pooh) is available inside this module, along with an example of a successfully completed case study.
The task of your case study assignments will be to determine the correct diagnosis for the client, and support your reasoning using the checklists in the DSM-V. The correct format for this is as follows:
Student Name: (Your name)
Diagnosis: (List the disorder as it is labeled in the DSM-V)
Diagnostic Criteria: (List all diagnostic criteria in the checklist for this disorder, and bold any/all symptoms that apply to the client in the case study)
Rationale: (Explain your reasoning in 1 – 2 paragraphs, citing specific instances from the case study itself. For every symptom that you have in bold above, there should be an explanation with specific examples from the case study cited)
Parameters: All submissions must be 1 – 2 pages in length, Times New Roman, 12 pt font. Submit each assignment as a Word document (.doc or .dox; I will not accept any other format).
FAILURE TO WRITE YOUR CASE STUDIES IN THE ABOVE FORMAT WILL RESULT IN A LOSS OF POINTS FOR THE ASSIGNMENT
Case Study #0 on Eeyore is provided inside this module. It is located just below these instructions.
