Assignment: TERMS TWO – General Systems Theory Terms
Boundaries (Smith & Hamon, 2022, p. 158, 159) plus one additional source.
System, Subsystem, and Suprasystem…each term should be addressed individually
Circular causality versus Linear causality (Smith & Hamon, 2022, p. 162-164).
Feedback (Smith & Hamon, 2022, p. 161) …must include positive feedback and negative feedback. Be sure to address the role of feedback in change or lack thereof.
Circumplex model of Marital and Family Systems: Use your library search tools to locate and use one or more of the journal articles by Olson and co-authors (c.f. p. 176 of chapter 4) to describe the model. You should discuss the changes in the model from the 1996 article to the 2019 article.

In this course each module has a TERMS assignment requiring the researching and application of specific terms related to the theories and therapies upon which MFT is built. This is very similar to learning a new language. Generally, these terms are discussed in the two textbooks or other assigned materials. Additionally, research requires becoming familiar with “Acceptable Journals for MFT Research Links to an external site.” available through the ACU Online Library. Learning to use these journals and the library resources is part of developing your “research literacy skills.” Students are discouraged from referencing dictionaries.
Each term has two sections for defining: 1) The general, basic, or fundamental definition of the assigned term as found in the academic literature, and 2) Illustrate how the term might be used specifically in MFT and the clinical setting. Your examples can come from academic sources or be created by the student hypothetically.
The formatting for the terms is listing the TERM followed by 1. Basic Definition: … and 2. MFT clinical application:
The publication manual for the APA must be followed for all references (paraphrasing and full referencing). The use of direct quotes is discouraged strongly. Quoting the authors directly does not reflect the students’ understanding of the term.
A single, separate section at the end of the assignment entitled References (centered) is required. This section contains a full reference citation for each source used in the terms discussed above. There is only one References section for this assignment.
