Individual Critique
Research, both the execution of research studies and the application of findings, is a communal activity. All participants bring their own unique readings of the research, which leads to a more complete evaluation of the article. The on-campus meeting critiques are an opportunity for you to experience the communal process of research critique. The individual critique is your chance to demonstrate your individual skills by critiquing an article on your own.
Written Critique: Using the designated CASP worksheet each student will critique the assigned article representing the method under investigation. There are three individual critiques: a quantitative, a qualitative and a systematic review. These instructions will apply to each of the individual critique assignments.
Each individual critique is an individual grade worth 10% of the final grade.
The CASP critique tools are fairly self-explanatory, consisting of check boxes and text boxes to add your rationale for the check box selection. The CASP worksheet is designed to simplify the submission process. In the narrative “explain” section of the critique you should reference the sources you used to complete your assessment, and these should be formatted in APA, 7th edition style. As with any written assignment, spelling and grammar will be included in your grade. You will submit the completed CASP worksheet with an accompanying reference list.
Written critiques will be graded on an 100-point scale:
Excellent
95-100 pts
Meets the criteria for Above Average and additionally supports comments with relevant outside resources. Demonstrates an advanced understanding of the module content.
Above average
89-94 pts
Meets the criteria for Satisfactory and demonstrates an advanced understanding of the module content.
Satisfactory
83-88 pts

Supports comments with references to the assigned article and textbooks. Work is well-written without grammatical or spelling errors. Accurately uses APA formatting for references.
Unsatisfactory
0-82 pts
Incomplete or absent submission. Demonstrates a deep misunderstanding of the assigned concepts or module content. Written work contains multiple spelling or grammatical errors. Does not adhere to APA formatting.
Late Assignments: All assignments are expected to be posted on time. Late assignments will incur a penalty of 5 points per day unless approved with advance arrangement by the faculty.
Academic Integrity: Every individual must access the latest edition Lienhard School of Nursing Student Handbook and review all Policies and Procedures including the information pertaining to Academic Integrity.
A reminder about participation: Participation in the on-campus sessions is reflected in your final grade. Simply being present is not enough to earn full credit, rather participating in the discussion about the article and method and demonstrating interest and preparation will garner full credit. See the participation information on your syllabus for more details.
