In the video, the presenter discusses the role of culture and how we interpret the behavior of others, and how we define our own. At one point, he makes the point that we approach to culture in one of three ways – confront, complain, or conform? For this assignment, you are being asked to explore these dimensions a little further.
Reflecting on the text (Chapter 6) and what has been discussed in this video, what are ways that cultural misunderstandings or misinterpretations may affect (or fuel) conflict? You may want to reflect on a global cultural difference, or even choose something more local like the culture of your workplace, family, or church. How might conflict be diminished or aided by not reacting to what we see, but by giving perspective first?
Use the points made by the presenter, related to the three C’s to discuss how conflict might emerge from cultural interactions.
Confront: My behaviors or perspectives are right, others are wrong. I have a duty to exert what I believe is true.
Complain: My behaviors or perspectives are right, others are wrong. I isolate myself in order to protect what I believe.
Conform (Adapt): My behaviors or perspectives are right (could be right), others also have behaviors or perspectives. I am able to adapt in order to grow.
Your response should be 2-3 pages not counting the cover and references pages.
