In preparation for subjects in next week’s module, find two articles from reliable mainstream news outlets about Population, Growth, and Demographics and read those articles carefully. Once you are familiar with the narratives, post your initial contribution, using the guidelines below.
Reliable, mainstream media outlets you may use include, but are not limited to, the BBC, CNN, Fox News, Economist, New York Times, Washington Post, the Washington Times, the Wall Street Journal, and the Week. You must only use sources deemed “highly factual” regardless of their bias. Do not pick editorials, promotional materials, or marketing materials that are carried on PR or university newswires (these distribute press releases), or anything that is clearly labeled as opinion only. You want articles that contain solid information — news articles. Finally, you don’t want long multi-page scholarly articles for these brief, right-to-the-point reading assignments. Those scholarly articles are appropriate for your research but not in these news-oriented reading assignments. The Discussion Boards form the basis of the weekly instruction and interaction for the module. Thus, you are reading about themes that are under consideration in the next unit, so you have a background briefing for the exercises and tasks that are taken up in week five.
Initial Post Contributions
Your initial post about your readings will use the following format:
APA References Citation – For help formatting an APA citation, examine these resources at the Student Success Center — Research, Plagiarism, and APA Resources. You will find a quick style guide and paper templates.
Summary of Article – A four to seven-sentence summary of the article (the main ideas and important details). As you need to pick up the main ideas and important details in your summary, you need to select news articles that are not too long to summarize. Do not use quotes in your summaries. This should be a paragraph about the article, written in your own words.
Reaction – A Four to seven-sentence reaction to the article. This is where you present your reaction to the information. You can also comment on the quality of the coverage, biases in it, questions left unanswered, questions left unasked, or any number of other questions. What you can’t do is just say you liked it or not. You need to react to the article. It could be how this was new to you or presented a different perspective. Or you may want to share a different perspective or add new information.
