In our first written assignment you were asked to present arguments in support of positions on an ethical issue. We will continue with that same issue in this paper and will add ethical theory to that reasoning. Ethical theory is useful for providing support for the ethical principles used as the basis in ethical reasoning. This paper works on adding that dimension of ethical reasoning by connecting ethical theory to the arguments (or variations on them) developed in the first written assignment. (You may use only deontology and utilitarianism as the ethical theories.)
No additional sources are needed for this paper, but it’s a good idea to do a bit of research in scholarly, peer-reviewed journals through our school library since two of these will be required on the final paper.
You must use either MLA or APA formatting for this paper. The total number of words should be about 500 to 750, which is two to three pages.
Outline of paper:
1. Introduction and Formulation of Ethical Question
2. Position Statement
3. Explanation of Ethical Theory
4. Application of Ethical Theory in support of the position statement
5. Opposing Position Statement
6. Explanation of Ethical Theory
7. Application of Ethical Theory in support of the opposing position statement
Elaboration on outline:
1. The section should be a somewhat revised or developed version of the Introduction from Written Assignment #1. (Approx. 50-100 words)
2. The position statement should be the same or modified based on your further reflection or comments from the instructor on your Written Assignment #1. (Approx. 10-20 words)
3. In this section, please select from Kant’s deontology or Mill’s utilitarianism based on which theory best supports the arguments from this side of the debate, and provide a brief overview of that ethical theory, including it’s main principles and how they can be applied to an ethical question. Apply that issue very simply to an ethical question that differs from the one you are using in your assignments, e.g, whether it is appropriate to lie in order to get what one wants. (Approx. 100-150 words)
4. Apply the ethical theory you have summarized to your issue and show how it can be used to support the position statement. (Approx. 50-100 words)
5. This section should be like section 2., but articulate the other side of the issue. (Approx. 10-20 words)
6. Please select that ethical theory (either Kant’s or Mill’s) that can best be used to support the opposing position statement. If the same ethical theory is the one that can best be used to support both position statements, then skip this section of the outline and go on to the final section. (Approx. 100-150 words)
7. This section should be like section 4., but should apply ethical theory in support of the opposing side of the issue. (Approx. 50-100 words)
