Read the text carefully and critically. Before writing, consider these questions:
What is the writer’s general subject?
What purpose does the writer have for presenting the argument?
What kind of audience does the writer seem to be addressing?
Does the writer see the audience as hostile, friendly, or neutral?
Does the writer estabiish themselves as well informed and fair?
Does the writer exhibit bias? If so, how does the bias effect the argument?
What is the writer’s position on the issue?
Does the writer support the opinion mainly with facts or with opinion?
Is the evidence convincing? Is there enough evidence?
Does the writer present opposing ideas and refute them effectively?
Begin your critical response by identifying your source and the author. Then write a clear and concise summary of the writer’s position (their argument). Next analyze the argument’s supporting points one by one. Consider the strength of the evidence that is presented. Also address whether the writer considers major opposing arguments and whether the arguments are handled convincingly. Use quotes, summaries, and paraphrases from the text as necessary. Finally, identify arguments that you consider unconvincing, poorly supported, or irrelevant. Sum up with a strong concluding statement.
