Servant Leadership is a leadership style that shows the leader can listen and be aware of the organization’s current issues. ( Neville et at.,2021 ). These types of leaders make it a goal to help their employees reach their full potential by coaching development needs. The article I chose focuses on utilizing servant leadership in education. The goal of this type of leadership is to involve their followers in the process of decision-making. This helps growth among the workers and improves the quality of the organization. (Neville et al.,2021 ). The ten characteristics that distinguish servant leadership are:
Listening
Empathy
Healing
Awareness
Persuasion
Conceptualization
Foresight
Stewardship
Growth
Community building
The servant leader is seen as a broad conceptual thinker and can balance operational functions (Neveille et al.,2021). Conceptualization and servant leadership have similar characteristics. Conceptualizations in the aspect of caring are organized into five categories:
Caring as a human trait
Moral imperative
As an effect
Interpersonal interaction
Therapeutic intervention
I think an excellent example of servant leadership was working through the pandemic. Nurses were at the frontline, risking their lives when the virus produced a high mortality rate. In this type of leadership, people can be taken advantage. Nurses’ lives were constantly put on the line while being forced to reuse their PPE, which increased their risk of contamination. Leadership frameworks can be beneficial to the nurse as they grow in their professional career. The goal in order for the nurse to grow into a leader is to become more confident in nursing skills and take more opportunities to be at the forefront. An essential aspect of leadership is also standing up for your staff. This is a problem that is a current issue in my unit. I currently work on a postpartum unit and feel that when we are at our max, staffing will still push us to the limit. My manager is a very approachable person but sometimes does not fight for our unit when it comes to safe staffing. I had been thinking about taking on a leadership role as a charge but had a really negative experience. One night there were a lot of deliveries our staff was at maximum capacity. The L&D floor did not care and called the house supervisor, who in turn called our manager. Initially, our manager said we could no longer take patients. I felt the house supervisor strong-armed our manager. She caved in, and by the end of the night, the charge nurse had 13 patients, and the nursery that is responsible for admitting babies at ten babies. This was a very unsafe staffing ratio. When I was approached about becoming a charge nurse I said no because I knew if I did not have the support of my manager in situations like this I could not be an effective leader. Even though my manager is very approachable and amicable, I feel like specific actions that were taken to please other people at the expense of your employees and cause burnout and high turnover.
