Discussion Board Question:
“Post your two questions and two takeaways either over Chapter 5 or the supplemental article Teacher Training. Make sure you cite your sources. In addition, remember to respond to two different peers. “When answering this keep in mind the post doesn’t have to be that long, I will give you two peers (classmates) post for this assignment. The length of the answer should be similar to theirs. Also, respond to the two different peers I give you after doing answer the question. You can pick one of the two articles it doesn’t matter. The peers I gave you did different articles so read both articles so you can respond accordingly.
Peer#1: Within this article, I’ll admit I had to remind myself to look specifically at the research setup and not just entirely at its contents/results. The article itself provides specifically interesting information with regard to the methodology of how each survey was distributed and who answered the survey altogether. I am curious to know the reason why the researchers decided to include Autism experts close to when the final administration of the survey was completed as opposed before survey distribution was even completed.
Another part of this article that intrigued me was the lack of data indicating the differences between the secondary and elementary age groups. As a School Psychologist, who also happens to work in a middle school, I found this subtraction to be interesting as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can manifest significantly differently in elementary versus secondary. Therefore the appropriate age level strategies taught and utilized may vary.
I am curious if the survey would add a component that talks to the appropriateness of the evidence based practice based on age within the classroom; as it is possible that some teachers may have received a training, but maybe not felt comfortable implementing it due to this lack of appropriateness for their students.
In looking at the results, one startling piece of information was the amount of participants who did their own research to evidence based practices and the fact that it was higher than the amount of in-school training.
Question 1: Based on our understanding of survey research, what components would you consider adding, if any, to add to this survey?
Question 2: If you were writing the “future research” portion of the article, what are some areas you would like to see tested that are not included in that section currently?
Morrier, M. J., Hess, K. L., & Heflin, L. J. (2011). Teacher training for implementation of teaching strategies for students with autism spectrum disorders. Teacher Education and Special Education, 34(2), 119-132.”
Peer #2: “The purpose of this chapter was to learn a research plan that is basically to investigate a given problem. A research plan serves three aspects that first you think through every study, second evaluate the study, and third provides the procedures to pursue the study. A research plan is beneficial for good planning and prevent problems from happening. Another takeaway was the components and comparisons between quantitative and qualitative research plans. Both of these research plans include an introduction section, but differ in an quantitative research plan includes a method section, while the qualitative research plan include a research procedures section.
Question 1. What is an example of good planning in foreshadowing potential problems to prevent them?
Question 2. By looking at the components and comparisons between a quantitative and qualitative research plan, which research plan would be more relevent and why?”
Responses don’t need to be long, here is a example used in the discussion board as a response to a peer :
“To answer your second question, it depends. Specifically when working in schools, sometimes qualitative is possibly the less invasive and more adaptable approach. That definitly does not mean that quantitative does not have its merits in education, however funding, lack of participants, and time tend to be significantly overlying factors when considering the quantitative approach. ”
You don’t have to respond to their question you can say you agree or whatever it is !
