For this essay assignment, you will tell the story of a literacy experience from your life—an event that involved reading and/or writing. Superior literacy narratives don’t attempt to chronicle all of an author’s literacy experiences. Instead they focus on a particular event or moment that shaped the writer’s literacy development or that played a significant role in the author’s life. It’s also interesting to think about how we use reading and writing in our various social groups (family, peers, religious organizations, sports teams, etc.). The best literacy narratives are strong in storytelling and rich in detail. These narratives also include analysis and reflection to explain the significance of the event. We will read a variety of literacy narratives that will help inspire your rhetorical choices as well as a number of texts that will guide you through the writing process.
