As stated in your text, informed consent is a necessary step in the research process. Informed consent is when the researcher informs the participants of what their participation involves. This is done before they participate in the study. One issue that violates the idea of full consent is the use of deception–that is, under certain circumstances, the researcher may not fully inform participants of what the research involves. For example, the researcher may tell the participant that they lost a game or failed a task when if fact they haven’t; the researcher may inform the participant that they show a marker for a liver disease when in fact they haven’t; or the researcher may be exposed to a situation that alters his/her normal way of responding. What do you think of the use of deception in research? Do you think it should be allowed? Why or why not?
