1.) Please read the poems and the interview above. Pay particular attention to David Abrams’ words and Malidoma Some’s suggestions for how to be in, and listen to, nature. Then in light of this…Assignment #2’s outdoor endeavor will involve crossing a threshold. This can be made between two trees. across a stream, or a line drawn in the sand. Once it is made step across imagining you are entering into a time when humans were in more intimate communication with the non-human world. Then take a walk (or find a place to sit)and let your ecological self expand its boundaries to include “the other” of nature…the “earth and sun and stars”. 2.) Let yourself be led to something on the landscape a mountain, a tree, rock, bird etc. that seems to be communicating or that you want to communicate with. Take time to listen, calling out even and see what comes to visit… wants to be seen or touched by you. From a deeper listening place see, hear, feel what wants to be communicated or conveyed. Take your time.. (suggestion: again use your imagination and suspend disbelief!) 3.) Try imagining you are that tree, bird , rock etc. that is seeing yourself. What does it want to say to you? After some time has passed with this sitting, or following this “being”, 4.) What would you like to say to it/them? Anything want to be said specifically in regard to human caused climate disruption? Try and give yourself at least an hour for this walk/sitting experience. Two hours even better. Before finishing make sure and step back across the threshold you created. Then write about what was communicated by you and them…and/or sketch, paint, write a poem, song etc. Sometimes words may surface sometimes images. Sometimes both. Trust what comes.
