To complete this group assignment, you will work with your group members to compile and write an alphabetized annotated bibliography on the primary and secondary resources you have all found so far for your Current Issues Project essays. Assignment Steps: 1) As a group, create a Word document called “Annotated Bibliography for the Signature Assignment.” You may want to create this document in Google Docs so that all members can contribute to the page directly. 2) Individually, each member of the group will edit the page, writing an annotated bibliography on two sources you will be using in your essay and one source found by someone else in the group that you will use in your essay. (Remember that for this essay, you must use at least one source found by another one of your group members, to show your mastery of group/collaborative research!) Therefore, each member of the group will be writing about a total of three sources–two sources you found on your own and one source found for you by another group member. If you have three group members, your group’s annotated bibliography should include nine total sources. If you have four group members, your annotated bibliography should include twelve total sources. Citations should be written in APA format. Make it clear who wrote which annotated bibliography entries by writing your name in parentheses at the end of each annotation you write. Using material from your prior Finding Sources Activity may help you to complete this assignment more quickly. 3) For each of your three sources, you will write an annotation containing the following elements: WHO found this source? Is this a source you found for yourself, or a source that another group member found for you? State who found the source. (Remember you must write about at least one source found for you by another group member.) SUMMARIZE the article’s main points. What are the main arguments? What is the point of this book or article? What topics are covered? If someone asked what this article/book was about, what would you say? (For more help, see this handout on paraphrasing (Links to an external site.) sources). ASSESS the source: Is the information reliable? Is this source biased or objective? What is the goal of this source? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? (For more help, see this handout on evaluating resources) (Links to an external site.). REFLECT on how you see yourself using this source in your paper. Is it useful to you as a source? In general terms, what things will you likely borrow from it (ideas, quotes, examples, statistics) to use in your paper? Has it changed how you think about your topic? Which portion of your essay will be supported by this source? Etc. 4) Upload your completed document here for credit. Only one member of the group needs to upload the assignment, but all members of the group must contribute. Sample APA Format Annotation Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. Henry Holt and Company. In this book of nonfiction based on the journalist’s experiential research, Ehrenreich attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and a Walmart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her relationships with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation. An experienced journalist, Ehrenreich is aware of the limitations of her experiment and the ethical implications of her experiential research tactics and reflects on these issues in the text. The author is forthcoming about her methods and supplements her experiences with scholarly research on her places of employment, the economy, and the rising cost of living in America. Ehrenreich’s project is timely, descriptive, and well-researched. In my paper, I expect to allude to some of Ehrenreich’s real-world experiences gained in her attempt to live on minimum wage earned from the three jobs that she held during her experiment. She doesn’t bring in many statistics in her book, but the comparison of expenses to income will be useful in the proposal section of my paper, where I plan to suggest and defend a particular minimum wage that is both equitable and achievable for American citizens.
