Students will interview a clinical professional helper (approved by the instructor) who specializes in any level of crisis intervention. Reflection paper to follow, 2 pages double-spaced describing your experience. The purpose of the assignment is to learn theories and approaches covered in this course through a real-life example. In particular, you must identify one individual to interview. This person must be a clinician or practitioner in a public or non-profit agency or program that incorporates crisis work. The interviews can be conducted in person or virtually. Group interviews are not an option. [The following people are excluded as possible interview subjects: National Louis University full time faculty members, the students immediate internship instructor and/or immediate supervisor]. Oral Interview To learn about how theories are applied in practice, you will interview one person who has experience putting these theories into practice through their work. To gather rich information about this individual’s experiences, you will need to develop interview questions that help you to understand their experience of and response to their work. For example: How often do issues of cultural competency come up in your crisis work? How do you approach working with clients who exhibit severe mental health concerns? What are the systemic and/or clinical challenges? What was it like when you first noticed that challenge? How do you manage it now? In the interview, strive to understand how the person perceives and experiences their work. Formulate your interview questions prior to the interview. Make sure that you secure permission for an interview from the individual, and stress the voluntary nature of the interview/observation. Interviewing or observing minors is permissible only in the context of securing assent from the minor and permission from his or her parent, again in the context of strictly volunteer participation. You may have them provide a statement indicating their willingness to participate in the assignment. Carefully consider the possibility of risk or harm in the questions you formulate and avoid any questions that might prove traumatic or disturbing to the individual(s). It is critical to keep all information you gather confidential and the identity of the informant(s) masked in the paper. Interviewing your classmates is not permitted.
