One of the most public arenas for “Public History” is in film – many historical films have paid historians and consultants on staff to achieve some level of accuracy in the retelling of the past, even when such movies take a great deal of license. Despite that fact that movies are biased and imperfect (as are all depictions of the past to some degree), often they inform many American’s understanding of the past and provide a widely distributed visual portrayal of historical topics whether accurate or not.
Think of the last movie that you watched of a historical nature. Tell the class what you watched, when it was made, and what era it depicted. Consider what impression of the past this movie conveys to you and whether that impression is accurate based on what you have studied in class. Why do you think the movie differs from reality? Do you think the era in which it was created influenced the content and design of the film? Would you recommend it to others?
