Instructions and rubric from the professor
The purpose of this assignment is to provide you with sense of what it is like to be in an environment and setting that is not familiar to you and one in which you do not speak the language. This experience is meant to give you a small example of a what an EL may experience in school in terms of not having familiarity with the language, culture, behaviors, etc. You should attend a cultural event, a religious service, or visit a Saturday language school at a cultural center in your community where the activities are conducted in a language other than English.
Suggestions:
Religious services are the easiest to attend because they occur on a weekly basis and people are generally welcoming toward newcomers. This service should be in another language in both the ritual and the main conversational events before and after. The intent is to go into a different community. Events held in a familiar social context or where you know many of the attenders, even though another language might be used in the ceremony will not do.
A cultural event, e.g., attending Eid ul-Fitr, the traditional celebration coming at the end of the month long fast of Ramadan, cultural festival held in a community setting, a social event like a wedding or other family celebration, a recreational or education class conducted entirely in a different language are all examples of cultural events that students have attended in the past.
Instructions:
Spend at least two hours in this activity. Please try and attend the event alone. This will allow you to really immerse yourself in a more authentic cross-cultural experience, and have a better idea of what it is like to be a new ELL in a U.S. school. However, if you must bring someone (i.e. you’re traveling to an unfamiliar area and need someone to be with you), make sure that this individual does not speak to you during the event so you can focus on the assignment at hand. Write about your experience – How did you feel before, during and afterwards? What seemed strange to you? What did you notice about people’s behavior? How did they treat you? What did you like? What did you dislike?
Length: 5-7 pages double-spaced, adheres to APA 7th edition formatting for citations.
– I need to make compare my experiences with the theory in the texts and integrate the course readings into the paper.
