I want to write a discussion forum of 3/4th page of the lecture materials attached in the question post. I am adding 2 posts of my classmates for which I need replies on the posts
Discussion post 1: Volcanic cooling vs. Carbon recapture: Which method resonates with you the most? This week’s lecture discusses the harrowing effects of climate change and paints a picture of just how dire the situation is, and can continue to be, especially if little to no action is taken to mitigate it. The planet is warming at an alarming rate due to rises in carbon dioxide emissions and climate change is enhancing the effect of natural disasters such as hurricanes and tornadoes. There are so many different methods of geoengineering that are being proposed and tested to help fight climate change such as marine cloud whitening, arctic restoration, volcanic cooling, balloon geoengineering, and carbon recapture. Among them, one method that sticks out to me is volcanic cooling because of its effectiveness along with the potential dangers it poses. Volcanic cooling is a geoengineering method in which sulfur is released into the atmosphere, similarly to how it would in a volcanic eruption. This method was developed after volcanic eruptions were observed to actually have a significant effect on cooling the planet. However, the immediate problem that can be faced when carrying out this method is that it “carries the serious potential of harming crop production across the world.” (Geoengineering May Be the Answer to Climate Change, 14:15) Serious caution is needed to proceed with projects such as volcanic cooling. On the other hand, a Geoengineering method that stuck out as most beneficial to me is carbon recapture, because of how the benefits to the atmosphere can basically go undetected by us in our daily lives. Synthetic fuel will have virtually the same cost, and can easily be incorporated into our daily lives as an alternative fuel source. As it’s explained later on in the VICE documentary, cars will still release carbon dioxide, but it will be ”recycled” or captured again. In terms of whether or not the government should put taxpayer dollars into geoengineering, I believe that if these methods can help save the planet, it could be worth the risk. As we’ve seen in previous lessons, taxpayer dollars have been put into projects that are far worse than Geoengineering, such as CAFOs which are actually harmful to the environment. I believe that with further research and development, Geoengineering could act as a feasible solution to the climate crisis and its methods and effectiveness will only advance over time.
Discussion post 2: THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STIL: It’s easy to not care about climate change to be honest because there’s a safe feeling knowing that it won’t happen during our lifetime, THE EARTH WILL NOT BE DOOMED DURING OUR LIFETIME, but one thing is sure we are starting to see the effects of our ancestors and our doings. Possibly we are participating in guaranteeing that our future generations don’t have a place to come home. This topic reminds me of a more extreme case where recently there was a hearing in Congress about UFOs being spotted and if aliens were real. This eerily reminded me of the movie, the day the earth stood still. Basically, it was a movie featuring Keanu Reeves as an alien that came to Earth in human form to destroy and kill all the humans because of the damage they were doing to the Earth. I’m not saying UFOs are real or that aliens are real or that if they are real they are going to kill us, im just making a connection. The damage we have done to the earth is noticeable almost anywhere you go, whether it’s in the smell, the scenery, or just looking at a street. There are garbage cans almost at every corner, yet the streets are dirty, how come? We are all probably guilty of dumping trash outside, Im not pointing fingers, but that’s the past of our actions and they have consequences, the first step to fixing something sometimes is to acknowledge it and make sure to remind yourself to never do it again, something that many of our parents have taught us as kids, it’s time to do exactly that when it comes to helping our bubble. In the movie, after Keanu spend some time with humans and has shown them that he’s on earth to kill them, he realizes that humans are capable of change when on the edge of the abyss, I implore people to not let humanity get that far so we can realize that we need to change. Us humans can be good and Keanus learns that he stopped his alien friends from destroying the earth and the people on it, but before he left, he and his alien friends took all technology away from the humans and left them in complete darkness which, to be honest, is a small price to pay for salvation, but I don’t want us to get to the point where we have to lose things to realize we need saving, but honestly, we are getting there.
