Directions: What are some factors contributing to “burnout?” How does burnout happen? How can you avoid this kind of job exhaustion? Include a personal enjoyment lists, and ways these things might effectively support your future human service work. REPLY BACK TO THIS STUDENTS POST: Some factors that contribute to burnout are not listening to your body. Your body will inform you when it is working too hard or requires a break. When we do not listen and keep going our body will let us know (depending on how serious the burnout is) by the constant feeling of exhaustion, loss of motivation, decline in creativity, and diminished patience. Factors that contribute to burnout include not properly handling stress, grief, or improper time management. We can avoid work-related exhaustion by understanding our role and expectations at work, asking for assistance when needed, and avoiding extremely monotonous work or work that is not rewarding. We should also try to avoid isolation at work and dysfunctional workplaces. My personal enjoyment list includes watching professional football, going on walks, and traveling. These are things that I incorporate as part of my self-care routines. Taking care of myself regularly will help me feel refreshed, capable, and competent. By administering self-care, I will be most effective for my clients by being actively engaged with them and attentive to their needs.
