Context: With Hobbes, Locke, and Hume, we examined views on the purpose of government and variations on governing by consent, i.e., the social contract. With Rousseau, Kant, and Mill, we shift our focus to freedom, equality, and governing according to distinctions of what is right or what is seen as good.
Instructions: Rousseau, Kant, and Mill argue, in one way or another, that freedom is gained when we mutually coerce one another into political agreement. Choose two of these three philosophers (e.g., Rousseau and Kant or Kant and Mill) and explain this statement. In doing so, be sure to cover the following:
What is the meaning of freedom for your two philosophers?
What role does equality play in freedom for them?
What specific aspects of mutual coercion (e.g., moral and/or political principles, agreement, restrictions) create the conditions of freedom?
