Choose two artworks from a text, or on line, or, if possible, from a museum; seeing the actual painting or sculpture gives you much more to work from. These need to be works from the 19th century, and they must be by two different artists.
Choose works that have similar themes or subjects. Example: compare two portraits, or compare two paintings of a group of people, or compare two landscapes.
Do not use artworks discussed in depth in your text or in my power. You may use the artists that have been discussed – just not those particular works.
You must email me about your selections before you pursue further research.
Format:
Title page with name, date, class, etc.
Introductory paragraph including information on the two artworks you are analyzing, when they were created and by whom, the period and the style.
Paper must be 4-5 pages long, 250 words per page.
Paper must include a bibliography of 4-5 sources, and be properly footnoted with any ideas that are not yours marked and put into parentheses if the quote is taken word for word.
Analysis:
This section should be composed of mostly your own writing – perhaps influenced by what you’ve read – but you must footnote any ideas that you have drawn from others. In other words, you are gaining knowledge of your selections, but you must reference an observation that is not yours and document the source for information on the history of the work and the cultural history of the area.
a. Analyze the composition of both works in detail. Discuss exactly what you see in terms of formal elements (line, shape, color, value, perspective, negative space, etc.) and subject matter.See examples in this folder and intro power point for guidance
b. Discuss the underlying subject matter: in this part you should discuss the purpose of these works and how they reflect this. This will take some research on the society and culture of the times, as well as looking at the influence of previous art.
c. Note influences from past styles evident in the works. How do these works differ from those past works that may have inspired them?
Conclusion:
Give a conclusion summing up your main points in regard to your works and their creators. The whole paper should be built on a theme, or major points that are established in the beginning and confirmed here.
